Brazil reaches sixth place in the world ranking of wind energy potential and has excellent results with the solar source

10.05.2022

Brazil has stood out globally for its large wind energy capacity, in addition to receiving high investments in other sources.

Published on Monday, April 4th, the report by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) details and analyzes in a complete way the scenario of the global wind energy sector. As shown by the Brazilian Wind Energy Association (Abeeólica), it is seen that Brazil rose one position in the Ranking of Total Installed Capacity of Onshore Wind Energy in 2021, now occupying sixth place. In 2012, Brazil was in 15th position, and last year it was consecrated the third country to install more wind power plants, according to the GWEC.

In the 2021 installed capacity ranking, Brazil reached 21.5 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity in onshore wind power plants and occupied the number 6 position, behind Spain (28.3 GW); from India (40 GW); from Germany (56.8 GW); the United States (134.3 GW) and China (310.6 GW).

According to the website Exame, in the global context, the Global Wind Report 2022 of the Global Wind Energy Council highlights that the planet's capacity expanded by 93.6 GW last year, bringing the accumulated wind energy capacity to a total of 837 GW, from in order to demonstrate the annual growth of 12%.

The country also guarantees good results in the solar matrix

In addition, Brazil surpassed the 14 gigawatts (GW) mark of operational capacity of the photovoltaic solar source, when adding the large plants and other energy production systems on a residential scale. Thus, the solar source exceeds the installed capacity of the Itaipu plant, according to an analysis by the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association (ABSOLAR).

According to the Association, since 2012, the solar source has already granted the country more than R$ 74.6 billion in new investments, R$ 20.9 billion in collections to the public coffers and provided even more than 420 thousand jobs. In addition, with the use of this source, the emission of 18 million tons of CO2 was avoided.

For Rodrigo Sauaia, CEO of ABSOLAR, the development of solar power in Brazil is essential to develop the country's social, economic and environmental spheres. “The source helps diversify the country's electricity supply, reducing the pressure on water resources and the risk of even more increases in the population's electricity bill,” he says.

Sauaia adds an analysis: “Large solar plants generate electricity at prices up to ten times lower than emergency fossil thermoelectric plants or electricity imported from neighboring countries today, two of the main factors responsible for the tariff increase on consumers”.

Sector Expansion

The energy sector predicts an accelerated expansion in 2022 in active solar systems in Brazil, especially those at residential levels, aimed at their own production, due to the increase in electricity bills and Law No. 14,300/2022, which created the legal framework for self-generation and is now in effect.

Ronaldo Koloszuk, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ABSOLAR, explains: “This is the best time to invest in solar energy, precisely because of the new increase already foreseen in the electricity bill of Brazilians and the transition period provided for by law, which guarantees until 2045 the maintenance of the current rules for consumers who install a solar system on the roof until January 2023”.

Brazil has 4.7 GW of installed capacity in large-scale solar systems, which corresponds to 2.4% of the total electricity matrix. Thus, these systems are the sixth largest source of electricity in the country, present in 19 states. As for the own generation segment, there is 9.3 GW of installed power from the solar source. Used in 99.9% of Brazil's own generation connections, the solar source is a leader in the sector.

According to Koloszuk, the solar source is quick to install and affordable. He concludes: “Competitive and clean electrical energy is essential for the country to recover its economy and be able to grow. The solar source is part of this solution and a real engine for generating opportunities and new jobs”.
