thyssenkrupp in Duisburg // Green steel & Carbon2Chem®

The steel production at thyssenkrupp Steel will become climate-neutral by 2045. As an interim target, the company aims to reduce its own emissions from production and processes as well as emissions from energy supply by more than 30 percent by 2030 compared to 2018. Two technology-neutral approaches are being pursued: The avoidance of CO2 through the use of hydrogen ("Carbon Direct Avoidance", CDA) and the use of CO2 produced ("Carbon Capture and Usage", CCU). In this way, the company ensures that steel production is also possible in a climate-neutral society - and ensures the future viability of industry and jobs.

The Carbon2Chem® project aims to use the emissions released during steel production as raw materials for chemicals. Surplus energy from renewable sources is used in this process. The project thus makes an important contribution to climate protection and the energy transition. It will take around 15 years before the concept can be used on an industrial scale..

The Port of Duisburg, situated at the Ruhr/Rhine junction, is the world's largest inland port and a crucial European logistics centre, serving over 30 million residents within 150 kilometres. Encompassing 1550 hectares (or 2170 soccer fields), the port handles 20,000+ ships, 25,000+ trains, and millions of containers annually.

The RH2INE initiative, or Rhine Hydrogen Integration Network of Excellence, aims to develop a sustainable H2 infrastructure along waterways from Rotterdam to Genoa. Backed by a €500,000 EU grant in July 2020, the project includes duisport, Dutch province Zuid-Holland, German state North Rhine-Westphalia, and ports of Rotterdam and RheinCargo. Initial steps focus on hydrogen procurement, storage, and distribution within the participating ports, with goals like 100 hydrogen-powered ships on the Rhine by 2030 and hydrogen-fuelled locomotives and trucks instead of diesel.

The Wilo Group is one of the world's leading premium suppliers of pumps and pump systems for building technology, water management and industry. With innovative solutions, smart products and individual services, the company moves water: intelligently, efficiently and in a climate-friendly way. Today, around 8000 employees work for Wilo worldwide.

The headquarters and production site in Dortmund was recently certified as "climate-neutral production". PV modules installed on the factory building supply part of the electricity required, while efficient technologies ensure that it is used in an energy-saving manner.

A hydrogen plant is in operation since fall 2022. Up to 10 tons of green hydrogen per year will be produced from electricity generated using solar energy. As a pilot plant, the H2 power plant will initially serve as an emergency power supply or backup power supply for the Wilopark, but the plant can be expanded to provide a self-sufficient energy supply for up to two days.
